Einstein and Buddha: The Parallel Sayings
Published in Paperback by Ulysses Press (February, 2003)
Authors: Thomas J. McFarlane and Wes Nisker
Average review score:

Such a significant book
If Hafiz incarnated and started throwing parties in New York and LA, and if the impossible were to happen at one of his wild bashes -- if one were to start to feel bored -- he might start reading from this wonderful book.

Who knows... maybe Einstein and the Buddha will slip into a few dreams of those squatting in the White House and boost their IQ's substantially -- which could then well result in making this book (and maybe a few Hafiz poems) mandatory reading before military service or even a mere drivers license was bestowed. And maybe everyone would be required to carry this book in their golf carts -- and if one forgot it (for even one hole) helicopters might swoop in and administer breath tests that were so sensitive that alarms would go off if you were a religious bigot, that is if you were anti-Einstein.

I better quit this review; the FBI might hound me, and
water-torture me into a Republican.

Daniel Ladinsky
Best-selling Penguin author of The Gift: Poems by Hafiz

Brilliant collection! Mr. McFarlane, just one suggestion:
In your book, would it be better to use "spiritual leaders", "religious figures", or even "eastern philosophers" rather than "mystics"?

Nonetheless, what a wonderful work to remove the superstitious impression on eastern religions of people who narrow-mindedly believe in science. Thank you so much!

Some additional information about the book, by its Editor
The over 120 parallels, each matching a modern physicist and an Eastern mystic, are a collection of startling clues that hint at a deeper relationship between science and religion. Statements by Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, Schrodinger, and other founders of modern physics are paired with remarkably similar statements by Buddha, Shankara, Chuang Tzu, and other Eastern mystics. This book shows you the surprising parallel statements of the physicists and mystics, grouped into a variety of themes, and lets you ponder their significance for yourself. What do they suggest to you about the relationship between the scientific and spiritual approaches to understanding reality? Regardless of whether or not you think the parallels indicate a profound unity behind physical and spiritual aspects of reality, these sayings should raise important questions and stimulate deeper insight into the mysterious relationship between science and religion.

Excellent, comprhensive commentary on long term care
6/10/99

As a nursing instructor, I utilized "Eldercare" in gerontology rotations. I found the book to be extremely comprehensive re long term care for the elderly. It is applicable to professionals and lay persons alike. It is an enjoyable read and a book that should be on all human resources book shelves. The student's also found "Eldercare" an excellent reource for their practice.

I also had the opportunity of having Mr. Cassidy speak to the students on eldercare issues. He is an excellent speaker who is thoroughly versed on isues of aging effecting all the helping professions. I felt honored to have him as a guest speaker and the student feedback was positive and affirming.

Louisville - A City Without Limits
The Encyclopedia of Louisville is an incredible reference guide and history of the city from its beginnings to the year 2000.The information on African-American life in Louisville is vast and interesting.I encourage anyone who loves or lives in the city to purchase this book. You will not be disspointed.

A Must For Every Louisvillian
While growing up in Louisville, I did not have any interest in my "little hick town". I dreamt of leaving for the big city. At 22 I left, for the west coast, eventually hitting the big cities of Dallas and Detroit, on my way back home. Now here, I find this the perfect place for raising my children. This book completes my journey, and brings me home. This is the most interesting book I have ready in years!

The World According to Louisville
This wonderful volume covers people, places, events and things in the Louisville metropolitan area from a historical and cultural perspective in encyclopedia style entries written by Louivillians. As a native Louivillian I am finding it a delight to browse thru the entries learning delightful details about my birthplace and its history. It takes many more universal topics and relates how they have impacted the city and its people. A must for Louisvillians that want to learn more about our rich history and cultural legacy.

Enola Gay: Mission to Hiroshima
Published in Hardcover by Motorbooks International (November, 1995)
Authors: Gordon Thomas and Max Morgan-Witts
Average review score:

Real to Life
This book is as real to life as possible in its discription of the events from Windover to Tinian and on to History. My grandfather served under Tibits and is pictured and mentioned several times in this book. As I turned the pages I was reading what I had heard first hand for several years from my grandfather spelled out across the pages. The attention to detail and recreation of the stories, events, and emotions capture the readers attention and draw you in. The various perspectives of the events also allows the reader to understand the magnitude of the bombings and the enourmous undertakingas that transpired prior to the event.

This is a must read for those who are interested in WWII History. I will pass this book along through the generations as the most accurate account of what transpired for my Grandfather and the men who served along side him.

Feels like you rode along when they dropped the bom
I read the authors Voyage of the Damned a long time ago and really enjoyed it. So when I found this book I had expectations. And they were easily met.

The authors take you along with Col. Tibbets and the rest of his squadron - through training, hellraising and more. The book reads like a novel even if it is based on well documented facts. They also cover both sides of the story including the experiences of Hiroshima survivors.

All in all a good and enjoyable read.

Excellent. Well researched information and fast paced.
From the very beginning this narrative grabs your attention. It wasn't until one hour away from Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945, that Enola Gay's pilot, Paul W. Tibbets turned around and announced to his crew that they were about to drop the world's first atom bomb.

The crew was handpicked by Tibbets. Their training was so secret and compartmentalized that they didn't even discuss it among themselves. They all "knew", but they didn't "know" until they were told. Survivors of "Little Boy" were also interviewed for this story.

Another book recommend is Flight of the Enola Gay written by her pilot, Gen. Paul W. Tibbets. This is the story from his perspective. Excellent.

Entering the Silence : Becoming a Monk and a Writer
Published in Paperback by Harper SanFrancisco (February, 1997)
Author: Thomas Merton
Average review score:

Brilliant early Merton
Thomas Merton's journals take up here in the momonastery in Gethsemani abbey in Kentucky in the 1940"s. An expurgated version of these entries has previously been published as THE SIGN OF JONAS,my personal favorite before the publication in the late 1990's of these unexpurgated diaries. Here we see the dutiful young monk, full of the zeal of the newly converted, seeing all of his brothers as "signs of God's wonder and Mercy." Needless to say, the tomne shifts slightly as the aura of conversion wears a bit, and Merton is given time to write. One of his most famous pieces done while he was on watch in the abbeys fire tower is included here, without the editing. Firewatch in and of itself is worth the price of the book. We begin to see here Mertons wish for a life of more seclusion, and here he mentions the Carthusians and the camaldolese as possible places he could find that solitude.{a wish that he held, apparantly until the end of his life]Merton's insaitable curiousity, his honesty in dealing with himself and his foibles, and his crystaline perceptions on the life of the spirit are being formed here in this volume. Indispensible for Merton fans, and welcomed to any who seek the path trod by a spiritual giant, and a very honest man.

A very warm, human effort showing the man the way he was.
When Thomas Merton retreated from the civilized mainstream to enter the Trappist Monastery at Gethsemani, an unknowing observer might view his spiritual struggle as ending, becoming completely lost in the routine of monastic life, its repetition and overt acceptance of spiritual discipline. The battle against personal desire versus group obedience to higher powers beyond flesh and blood one would assume to have been a forgone conclusion. Merton brilliantly shows us, however, that within the souls of men the battle still rages. And it is how he dealt with that struggle that makes this book so marvelous. His caring and loving approach to life and others is tempered with griping about the choir's proficiency, the demands of writing within the monastic framework, the lack of understanding by superiors and comrades in spiritual arms concerning his shifting spiritual needs, for solitude, quiet and letting God sort things out for him, vice pushing his own, highly tempered will into the whirling mixture that made up this complex, brilliant man. The writing is first rate, his descriptions of the surrounding countryside are marvelously genuine as is his analyis of himself and his motives. (like to move onto a more strict, Carthusian order to reach the apotheosis of perfect contemplation). This book is a good building block for future reading of this author and I would recommend reading the entire biography/journals before even wandering into the not so clearly written efforts of Merton's theological books. Many thanks to the publisher for finally making such great writing available!!

Merton: The battle between Monk & Man
The second of Merton's private journals in a series of seven, editor John Montaldo brings out the struggle that Thomas Merton, already a noted writer and critic, endured during his earliest monastic days (1940-early 1950s). Merton tackles a sort-of internal battle between the man who writes in the wee hours, and communicates with his New York society friends (among them was poet Mark van Doren!), and the monk who seeks to live out the Rule of St. Benedict to its fullest extent. First time Merton readers might be lost, but Montaldo skillfully fills in the details so that all readers will be able to focus on the struggle between man and Creator. Seasoned Merton fans will be given a deeper appreciation for the writer and devout monastic that emerged as a result of that internal confrontation. Not something to pass over!

It helped during a low period of my life.
Mr. Hughes' book is a big help to get closer to God. It allowed me to taylor the daily readings to my needs. It challenged me and helped me to find peace in my life. It gave me a greater understanding of God's word. I can not wait to find more of Mr. Hughes' books.

Insightful, deep devotional study guide.
An excellent devotional with scriptural support that makes one think. Much deeper than the average meditation guide. Index of themes is also most helpful. Highly recommend to those in pursuit of a closer walk with God. (Each devotional takes around 15 minutes.)

Very inspiring.
Every Day Light is inspiring and it gives the reader a opportunity to study the Bible. This devotional not only gives commentary but challenges the reader to give their input about the overall theme.

The beautides study was most helpful. Mr. Hughes presented provoking thoughts on this topic.

I will be looking forward to the next edition.

An Explanation of the Baltimore Catechism of Christian Doctrine: For the Use of Sunday-School Teachers and Advanced Classes
Published in Paperback by Tan Books & Publishers, Inc. (June, 1994)
Author: Thomas L.,Rev. Kinkead
Average review score:

A book for all Catechism teachers
This reference book is great for any teacher or parent who is instructing their children on the teachings of the Catholic Church. The book covers all topics of the Church such as Purgatory, indulgences, the Ten Commandments, etc. If you want your children to grow in their Catholic Faith and become true soldiers of Christ, then this book will give them the foundation they need to live virtuous Catholic lives, so that they can pass on their Faith to their children.

useful to structure and write essays
The answers to the questions are useful to structure and write essays especially for essay questions on tests in liberal arts studies and term papers. The explanations to the questions in the book were written with an introduction, body, and conclusion. It also used many transitional markers(however, therefore, hence, since, thus, etc.) and used many semicolons. Since it was written in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, it tends to be very wordy use many long and run on sentences. It also uses Victorian style prose. The #4 edition is very useful for those who want to learn how to write and structure essays and term papers and also for the mechanics of writing.

Review from the Publisher
An Explanation of the Baltimore Catechism is a reference work and teacher's manual for the original Baltimore Catechisms. Also, it can itself be used as an advanced textbook and thus is sometimes referred to as Baltimore Catechism #4. It was written both as an aid to all those who would be teaching from the Numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3 Catechisms, and as a more complete statement of the Faith. Its purpose is to explain the questions in greater detail than do the earlier books in order to supply the catechist with additional information to enhance his instruction. To provide easy reference, questions bear the same numbers as in Catechism 1 and 2. For giving additional classroom dimension, for use as a textbook, or for just interesting reading, its fascinating explanations of many little known questions pertaining to our Faith will richly reward the questioning reader.

A Few Selected Exits
Published in Paperback by Dufour Editions (December, 1993)
Authors: Gwyn Thomas and Russell Baker
Average review score:

A literary masterpiece
The canon of novels, short stories, plays and television appearances left to the world by the late, great Gwyn Thomas are unique in that they perfectly define a country and its people. If you thought that the only literary genius to come out of Wales was Dylan Thomas, then you have an absolute treat in store for you.

Gwyn Thomas is the ultimate literary craftsman. Words came easily to him and with just a few well chosen sentences he can evoke a mood, a time and a location. His books are like roller coasters. He takes you to the places he writes about. His characters become real people and, through him, you share their passions. I have absolutely no hesitation at all in recommending this book to people who love books. It is an absolute classic and when you read it you will understand why Sir Anthony Hopkins was willing to take a massive pay cut to appear as Gwyn Thomas in the BBC film of the book.

The man was a genius. Buy this book. Read it and tell your friends about it.

Selected Exits is a thoughtful and humorous read. A "must."
Follow the life of this little-known Welsh playwrite from his roots in the coalfields of the Rhonda Valley through a brilliant scholastic career in England.

Also, make a special effort to see the excellent television program from the BBC based on this book. Anthony Hopkins is at his best as Thomas.

This book, and the television production noted above, is a must for lovers of literature and humor. These works should have a much wider audience.

Gwyn Thomas' autobiography is unlike any of it's kind.
Gwyn Thomas' autobiography "A Few Selected Exits" is unlike any other autobiography you have read. A bold statement, but one which is easy proved. A reader need only delve into the first few pages, and they will be hooked on the genius of a man unappreciated in his own time. Thomas' autobiography is the only one I have read which is not self serving. He recounts escapades from his life yes, but in such a non-linear way, one gets the impression of sharing a drink with him in a pub. I have never read a book before which will make the reader laugh out loud in a room alone. Thomas skewers pretension at his alma mater Oxford, and takes a honest but affectionate view of the youth he spent in poverty in Wales with equal enthusiasm. .

Fire Up Your Learning
This is one of the best book on accelerated learning I've ever read. This book is a must-read book for everyone who cares about education. This is the best book on the basics.
Excellent and Brilliant.

Fire Up Your Learning
I have read many books on Accelerated LEarning subject and I found this book is one of the best book I've ever read on that topic.

I highly recommend this book for teachers, trainers and parents.

An excellent start for Accelerated Learning
This book is written in a very easy to understand and easy to apply format. Is an excellent option for students, teachers and parents (specially those concerned about how to get the best from the natural ways to learn). Although this is an elementary book, is the best I know about how to introduce the reader in the ABC of Accelerated Learning: multiple intelligences, learning styles, the 3 brains theory, music for learning, memory functioning, short term memory and large term memory, etc. Besides, this book is a web based learning program (the web site is a good companion for the book).
This is a very powerful and easy to implement accelerated learning program. Tom had made a great job here. I really recommend this book for those interested in getting the best about their natural ways of learning.

Flying Fury: Five Years in the Royal Flying Corps (Vintage Aviation Library, No 15)
Published in Paperback by Greenhill Press (December, 1987)
Author: James Thomas Byford McCudden
Average review score:

KUDOS TO McCUDDEN!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Considering his humble origins in an England heavily rooted in class, and his rise from a bugler in the Royal Engineers to a mechanic in the Royal Flying Corps to one of the finest fighter pilots of the First World War, James McCudden shows that anyone can aspire for greatness, provided one is willing to work and sacrifice.

For anyone with a curiosity about what air warfare in the First World War was really like, READ THIS BOOK. I highly recommend it.

A True Classic!
This biographical account of the one of Britain's leading aces from World War I is one of the best flying tales ever written of any era. At the age of fifteen, McCudden started out as a bugler in the Royal Engineers before becoming a mechanic in the Pre-WWI Flying Corps when aeroplane technology was still very immature. He witnessed, indeed participated, in the trials and tribulations of the nascent Flying Corps and, as war arrived, saw the fragile craft used in experiments with armed combat against troops on the ground and against enmey flying machines. His interest in flying led to passenger rides in a variety of aircraft and eventually to his performing aerial observer and gunner roles in combat where he was decorated. That was just another step in his aeronautical adventure as he was subsequently selected to train as a pilot and thrown into combat in the same sector as some of the leading German aces such as Voss and Richtofen where he not only survived, but eventually become a leading ace himself. His description of his five years in the Royal Flying Corps was written while the war was still ongoing and literally days before his posting as a squadron commander and tragic death in a flying accident en route to his new squadron. His writing style is fresh and immediate capturing the day today life and passions of WWI aviators. His impressions of his foe and the relative performance of the various flying machines are unique and better than any other author from that conflict. The publishers deserve credit for recognizing the value of this slice of history and making sure it remains available to the public. The rating system only allows 5 stars...this book deserves special status beyond that. Indeed, it has such on my shelve.

Brave simple man who loved his King and country
James McCudden's book is one of the finest written about aviation of the first world war. It is basically written by a man who was a hero who was very modest, It takes the form of a diary and gives more or less a day to day event of what it was really like to fly planes made of canvas against an enemy who McCudden had great respect for. For anyone who has a passion for first world war history this is a book not to be missed,(maybe i'm biast) Please remember when reading this book that the man had very little schooling and wrote the book in a matter of weeks and the last entry is only a few days before he was killed. A GREAT BOOK.
